Don’t Let the Snowstorms Bring You Down

As snowstorms and polar vortexes are making their way across the country it is the ideal time to start planning your escape to beautiful Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park. There is so much to see and do at Acadia that it can be easy to overlook some of the best parts of the park, which is why we’re here to tell you what you shouldn’t miss during your next visit. For starters, you can go on an unforgettable adventure and spend time exploring the Carriage Roads. These roads take you through forests, around mountains, along side lakes and beaver ponds.

The many amazing bridges throughout the system are always worth a closer look. Since no motorized vehicles are allowed, the peaceful nature of the roadways often offer  a chance to observe wildlife native to the area,  Whether you choose to walk, run  or ride your bike, the Carriage Roads will give you a chance to experience the real Acadia Another great option is the Quiet Side.  As you drive along Rt. 102 on the west side of Somes Sound, you should stop in the village of Somesville and visit the little museum and take a picture on the Somesville bridge.  You may wish to stop along your route to hike one of the many trails or take a refreshing swim in Echo Lake on your way to Southwest Harbor.  Enjoy a relaxing walk along the side streets of this small coastal town.

The quaint harbor has an array of shops, restaurants and a museum or two so plan to spend a while. Don’t forget to make a trip to the top of Cadillac Mountain. Whether you chose to hike one of the trails to the top or drive, once you get to the summit, you can see forever.  Experience the 360 degree views and if you time it right, the most spectacular sunsets. –Karen
